While the original 4-day plan was to backpack to Buck Creek Pass, climb Buck Mountain and then traverse the Massie Lake High Route, I had to settle for just Buck Creek Pass due to boot problems.  The sole of my left boot came off 10 miles from the trailhead, making extensive off-trail travel and scrambling a bit too risky.  The sole of my right boot also came off on the hike back out.  The lesson:  Always carry at least four feet of duct tape for boot repair.

But at least Buck Creek Pass is a spectacular place to hang out, full of wildflowers and awesome views of Glacier Peak’s eastern face, including this pre-dawn shot from our campsite.

Duct tape … it’s what keeps us on top of the food chain.
